Prologue
We know virtually nothing about our world, and even less about the universe that surrounds it. Every day, we advance our technologies and sciences. And, while we think we're moving forward, what we are doing is really going backwards.
The peoples of the past all had different ways of getting through the day. Many of which involved magics that they had created, which science today has proven doesn't work.
But what if it did? What if those magical cures and items of the past worked? A childish idea
or at least I used to think so.
My name is Jake Adam, and I used to be a person, just like you. Or, at least a full person. Now Im not sure what I really am. Part of me wants to stay the tall, brown haired human that I was born. He other half, wants to stay in the other world, where humans dont exist. Where Im a tall brown furred half cat, half person.
This other world is a place that no one can really understand until theyve been there. It is a world without pain (Well, without extreme pain anyway.), suffering, or war. Its a world where magic exists, and death is simply part of the life cycle. When one dies there, they are simply reincarnated as another. In truth, it has no real name, but I believe the only name deserving of such a wonderful place is Eden, which is what Ive come to know it as.
But yet, it isnt truly my world, what right do I have to live there? Sometimes I wonder what will happen to me when I die. Will I be reincarnated as well, or just move on?
Sometimes I wonder if Im insane, and in a mental asylum. After all, a world where anything is possible is just fiction, right? But, I know that its real, theres just something about it that makes me know Im sane.
I guess Claire is living proof that the world is real as well. Ive known her my whole life, and sometimes I wonder if shell ever grow up. Even as the detective she is today, she still is as unpredictable as when we first came to Eden. As for me, Ive changed quite a bit from the skeptical teen I once was.
My tale begins at my high school, at about 2:53 p.m. Ill never forget that day, Claire was getting notes for a Literature project she was starting from the Library
-------------
Chapter 1:
My fourth block teacher let the class out a few minutes early, which was not all too unusual. We had nothing left to do, and then decided she wanted to get out just a few minutes early herself. She did this usually once a week, and today was that day of the week, Friday.
I walked through the halls of the school, and decided to see if anyone else was out yet. I walked past the library door, and took a step back to it. I looked inside, and saw my friend Claire taking notes at one of the computers. I opened the door, and walked into the fairly large library.
It was probably only the second time I had been in here this year. The walls were all covered by dark brown wood shelves; each one had at least twenty or so books on it. There was one woman behind a counter, checking out books to a few people who needed them. I took a look at the rather plain black and white clock on the wall, 2:53
I better hurry up, I thought watching as the woman behind the counter checked out another book.
I ignored her, and went straight to Claire, poked her shoulder, Hey. I greeted. She turned from the computer, her bright green eyes staring up at my own brown ones.
Hey, she replied, and turned back. She had apiece of paper on the table in front of her, right next to the computer, You got everything you need for the project? She asked keeping her voice fairly low.
She was a fairly normal looking girl. Long red hair ran down past her shoulders, and rested on her back. She was wearing a black jacket, and blue jeans. She was still wearing her smirk, as she almost always was.
I looked up at her computers screen, reading something about Shakespeare, Im not in English yet. I retorted quietly.
She smirked, Oh, right. So why are you here then?
I could ask you the same thing. dont you have Spanish right now? I asked, knowing the answer already.
I skipped. You get out early again or something? She asked, writing down a few more notes.
Just as I was about to reply, the school bell rang. It was time to leave, and Claire kept on writing notes, Arent you gonna leave? I asked, checking my backpack to make sure I didnt leave anything.
One minute
Ive got a few more notes I want to take before going.
Cant you just do this at home? I asked her, not wanting to miss my bus.
Ive got plans tonight, I cant. She kept writing, though for some reason, it seemed to me like she was writing slowly. Did she want to miss the bus?
Were gonna miss the bus if we stay here too long. I informed her, not wanting to have to leave her here.
Then go, Ive got to finish. She said, copying down a few more words.
And ride home alone? Thats so boring though. You know I cant stand the people on our bus, not without anyone to talk to. I replied, sitting next to her.
Aw, so you just want to be with me. How sweet. She joked, and began chuckling at her own joke.
Nah, I just get bored there. I think itd probably just be better to walk sometimes. I joked, not actually meaning what I said.
She smirked, So why dont we?
Why dont we what? Walk home? Its kind of a long walk.
Its not that bad. Cmon, if we miss the buses, well walk, how bout that?
I dont know why I said it, but I did, Fine.
-----
Twenty minutes later, we were on the streets, walking in the direction of our homes, I cant believe we missed the buses. I said, letting out a small sigh. It wasnt really that bad walking. It was finally warming up to a normal temperature after a few cold days. Plus, I liked being outside too. I was actually getting to see a lot of the places I usually just got a glance of when I rode the bus.
Claire chuckled, and looked at me, Well, at least I got all my notes taken care of.
I chuckled at that, Yeah, what would you do without getting that done at school. You might have to do some
I made a fake shudder, Homework.
Hey, I do my work. Just not necessarily on the correct date. Besides, I told you, weve got plans tonight. She had a malicious grin painted on her face when she spoke.
We? I replied, confused.
Yeah, I found something really cool a week ago, and I figured I should show it to you.
Do I have a choice in this? I asked, noticing we were getting pretty close to our neighborhood.
Not at all.
What is it? I asked a little intrigued.
We were out front of our neighborhood now, and she still had that same evil grin on her face. She took the lead, and began walking across the street. I followed as well, my curiosity growing. I knew it wasnt going to be anything good, yet I followed anyway. I stared at her long red hair as I walked behind her.
She took me into the woods across the street, pretty far in too. She looked up at me, Okay, now that no one can see us, I can show you what I was talking about. She made a fist, and then extended her right index finger. She put it on my forehead a second later.
Uhh, Can I ask wh.. She cut me off with a sharp Shh.
She started mumbling something, and I tried to listen, not understanding a word. It sounded like gibberish to me, but yet something about it seemed odd. Like it was from some kind old ritual or something like that.
She took her finger off my head, and said, Just kidding. She began to laugh, I think you were starting to go along with me for a second there!
What was that all about? I asked, she replied with a shrug, I was bored, it just came to me. She was lying though, there was something weird with what she did, something I didnt understand.
Then, in one second, my head was on fire. I grabbed it to try and feel what was going on, but there was nothing there. I saw Claires mouth move, but I couldnt hear her. I felt for my ears, only to find they were gone completely! No blood, no hole, just nothing.
I fell to the ground, staring at Claire who stared back at me. She looked like she didnt care, she even smiled!
I looked down, and saw my whole body was disappearing, Oh god, I thought, staring back up at Claire, who herself was starting to disappear, her head already gone, What did she do! I panicked as everything went black
